Phillipe and Elloise jumped into the first Llamaborghini they came to. Agent 0077 took the driver’s seat and floored the accelerator, heading for New Llama City at breakneck speed. In the distance was an orange glow with a plume of thick smoke, and they could hear the wail of sirens.

The blaze was burning intensely when they arrived at the industrial estate. Phillipe retrieved transparent LOL smoke masks from the glove box for himself and Elloise. The protective mask was dubbed the ASS, which stood for All Smoke Stopper. Phillipe thought the gadget needed a new name, but the technology whizzes in Development were sticking with it.

Phillipe and Elloise marched towards Chief Llamadilla, who was spitting orders at the llama firefighters. ‘We’ve found evidence of fire accelerants,’ he told the secret agents. ‘And this.’ He handed Phillipe a credit card.

Phillipe’s eyes widened, wondering what arsonist would be stupid enough to leave their credit card behind. ‘What?’ he gasped. ‘This belongs to General Bottomburp.’

The fire chief’s radio crackled and a voice sounded. ‘Robbery in progress. Corner of North and Eleventh Street. Tiffanllamas & Co Jewellery Store.’

Tiffanllamas was a well-known store, famous for its stunning – and stunningly expensive – gemstones. Celebrities, actors, politicians and diplomats frequented the shop.

‘The city’s entire police department is managing evacuations and traffic here,’ Chief Llamadilla explained. ‘We don’t have the llamapower to get anyone over there. Can you two handle it?’

‘Of course,’ Phillipe agreed. He was keen to help, especially if it assisted their own mission. ‘LOL goes wherever we’re needed.’

‘Do you think the fire is another diversion?’ Elloise asked, as they raced back to their vehicle.

Phillipe nodded. ‘Possibly. Let’s see if we can catch the culprit red-handed this time.’

The fire had caused grinding traffic jams, so the trip to Tiffanllamas was slow. By the time they arrived at the jewellery store, the robbers were gone.

‘Did you see who did it?’ Phillipe asked the befuddled store owner, a mole rat named Klaus.

‘I saw nothing.’ The buck-toothed creature shook his head. ‘They burst in, demanded the Green Iguana Emerald then took off. It was over so quickly and they wore badger masks. We never saw their faces.’

Phillipe tapped his chin thoughtfully. ‘If badgers are behind this, why wear badger masks?’

‘Could be a ruse to throw us off the scent,’ Elloise suggested.

Klaus nodded. ‘It was a strong scent too. They smelt very badgery. Although they didn’t fluff, thank goodness.’

‘What do you mean “fluff”?’ Elloise asked.

‘You know,’ Klaus began, ‘break wind, parp, fart, cut the cheese, let it rip, toot . . .’

Elloise nodded. ‘We get the picture.’

Klaus didn’t seem to hear her and continued, ‘Shoot a fairy, let one slip, do a stinky, let off, spread a stench, burb. I can give a real-life example, if you like?’ He rubbed his stomach. ‘I’ve been feeling gassy since lunch.’

‘Please don’t,’ Elloise said emphatically.

‘I need that emerald back,’ Klaus said. Tears formed in his eyes as he wrung his paws together. ‘It belongs to Queen Eliziguana, and it’ll be my head on the chopping block if it’s lost.
